Cloak of the Quest Giver

The depths of this dark grey cloak left behind by the mysterious stranger seem uncannily beguiling.


Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement)

This medium-sized, engulfing dark grey cloak with a large hood is always left behind when the embodiment of the cloaked stranger in a tavern vanishes. It seems relatively comfortable, having been made of a strange thick and woolly material somehow lacking in corporeality at an intuitive level despite nothing observational proving this nagging thought. Its effect activates when one is attuned to the cloak and the hood is first drawn over one’s head.

The cloak has the following properties:

Hide Identity. When the hood of the cloak is drawn up, it casts an illusionary shadow which prevents the character’s face from being seen. Determining any detail regarding the character’s identity requires a successful DC 20 Perception check.

Darkvision. The user can see in dim light within 60 feet of them as if it were bright light., and in darkness as if it were dim light. They cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.

Cursed. This cloak is cursed, a fact that is revealed only when an identify spell is cast on the cloak or one attunes to it. Attuning to the cloak curses the wearer until they are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic; the cloak cannot be removed or harmed while the curse is inn effect. While cursed, the wearer is under the effects of geas (see p. 245 of the Player’s Handbook for details) which forces them to offer a stranger at least 10% of their wealth in exchange for successfully completing some related task once a day when the character needs help with something.
